The Kenya-Tanzania electricity line, a long-awaited high-voltage connection between the two neighboring countries, is set to be launched later this year. With plans first disclosed in 2016 and an initial target to start shipments to Nairobi by 2018, Tanzania’s ambitions to export power to Kenya are finally materializing.
Ethiopia as a Major Source of Kenya’s Electricity Imports
Currently, Ethiopia stands as the largest source of Kenya’s electricity imports, thanks to a 25-year agreement that commenced in November of the previous year.
Under this agreement, Kenya has been importing substantial amounts of electricity from its Horn of Africa neighbor. In the three months leading up to March, Kenya successfully shipped 218.29 million kilowatt hours (kWh) from Ethiopia, further solidifying their energy partnership.
Additionally, an additional 69.31 million kWh was imported from Uganda during the same period.
