Sinda Island is just off the coast of Kigamboni, one of five districts in the Dar es Salaam Region of Tanzania. This unspoiled haven offers a blend of natural beauty and rich history.
A few years ago, I had the opportunity to produce a television programme about this hidden paradise… its stunning white sands, clear blue waters, and fascinating past left an unforgettable mark on me.
Sinda Island is part of Dar es Salaam’s island cluster. The island is one of seven beautiful islands that grace the coastline of Dar es Salaam. The other six islands include Bongoyo, Mbudya, Pangawini, Inner & Outer Sinda, Inner & Outer Makatube and Kendwa. Each island has its unique charm, but Sinda stands out with its untouched allure and calm environment, making it a must-visit for those seeking a serene escape.
The island can be accessed through different hotels in Kigamboni. Boats normally leave at around 9 am and return around 3 pm.
Sinda Island is packed with fun activities. These include;
Camping: For adventure enthusiasts, Sinda Island offers a safe and exciting camping experience. However, it’s important to notify the local authorities before setting up camp to ensure your safety and compliance with regulations. The island’s seclusion provides the perfect backdrop for a night under the stars, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Snorkelling: Sinda Island is a diver’s and snorkeller’s paradise. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the island are ideal for diving and snorkelling. Vibrant marine life and stunning underwater landscapes offer a unique experience for both novice and experienced divers. Whether you’re exploring the coral reefs or swimming alongside colourful fish, the underwater world of Sinda is breathtaking.
Flora and Fauna: The island is famous for its coconut crabs and a unique baobab tree the locals call the ‘Champagne Baobab Tree’. This baobab has one of the curious natural features that resembles a champagne bottle, earning it its playful name. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss and adds a touch of botanical wonder to your island adventure.
History Lesson: Sinda Island also has a rich historical narrative. During the colonial period, Germans lived on the island, and their influence is still evident today. Exploring Sinda provides a unique opportunity to learn about this period and see remnants of the past intertwined with the island’s natural beauty.
Sinda Island is a place where history, nature, and adventure intersect. Whether you’re camping under the stars, diving into clear waters, or exploring historical remnants, Sinda Island offers an extraordinary experience for all who visit.
