I recently attended the All-African Movement Assembly (AAMA) in Accra, Ghana. Hosted by Africans Rising, this vibrant assembly is one of the largest gatherings of African visionaries advocating for different rights on the continent, emphasizing the significance of a borderless Africa and the power of the passport in fostering unity.

One of the key campaigns showcased during the event was the Borderless Africa initiative, which called for free movement and elimination of visa requirements for travel within Africa, encouraging greater unity, trade, and development.

Through my work at Crescendo Digital, we brought together 20 influencers from across Africa, leveraging the power of social media and digital storytelling to share their stories and spark conversation around this movement.

While we’re not quite there yet (thanks to all the fine print of individual country policies), it got me thinking: Just how powerful is the Tanzanian passport? Where exactly can our beloved blue book take us?

First, let’s talk about the world of visas. Yes, it’s that bureaucratic jungle we all love to hate. Some countries will have you filling out enough paperwork to write a book (just to visit).

Others have embraced technology with the eVisa, where you click, pay, and hope for the best.

Then there’s the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which sounds fancy but is essentially a digital thumbs-up to enter. And finally, my personal favourite is visa-free access!

That’s the golden ticket. No forms, no fees. Pack your bags, show up at the border, and stroll like you’re at a friend’s place.

Now, what about the Tanzanian passport? Some of you may roll your eyes at it, but hold on!

Henley and Partners’s recently released Global Passport Index for the first quarter of 2024 ranks our blue gem as the 10th most powerful passport in Africa and a respectable 69th globally.

Alright, it’s not quite a Mike Tyson heavyweight passport, but it’s a solid Rashid Matumla (our very own Tanzanian boxing legend!) Our trusty passport grants us visa-free access to 43 countries.

Yes, you heard that right! We may not be the loudest neighbours on the block, but we have access.

So, where exactly can our blue beauty take us without jumping through visa hoops? Here’s the list of 43 visa-free countries you can glide into… no forms, no drama, show your return ticket and a place to stay. Ready?

Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Dominica, Ecuador, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guinea, Haiti, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Macao, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Micronesia, Mozambique, Namibia, Philippines, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, South Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

I know some of these places sound like dream destinations (and they are!), but let’s be honest, those flight prices? Some tickets could make you consider selling a kidney. But hey, if you plan well, sell that kidney, and recover in time, you’ll be sipping coconut water in the Bahamas with a smile.

But wait, there’s more! Tanzanians can also secure visas on arrival in 30 countries. But, in 122 countries, you must undergo visa processes (eyes rolling!).

Now you know! You have access, and you have destinations.

So, before you throw your passport in your bag and dash off to the airport, check the specific visa requirements of your destination. After all, a little planning goes a long way.

So, where next?
